As I mentioned, Jacob attends the Ted Lenart Regional Gifted Center, administered by the Office of Academic Enhancement at Chicago Public Schools (these links are mostly for my benefit, as I keep referring back to these sites as I explore the topic of gifted education).
The stated goal of regional gifted centers is to provide an accelerated curriculum for the academically advanced, averaging 2 grades ahead of the child's age.
The way that aptitude for this program is assessed, is via a test administered to four year olds that assumes no reading ability or visual recognition or letters or numbers.
So it seems perfectly plausible that a child would do well on the test, and yet not be prepared to read at second grade level by the kindergarten.
